AUTONOMASS had the pleasure of meeting Captain Will Jackson, a seasoned tugboat captain who operates in US waters and shares his experiences through his popular YouTube channel – Tugboat Willy. As AUTONOMASS develops a digital platform for tug operations, we sought Captain Will’s practical insights to ensure our solution meets the real needs of tug operators. Here is what we learned from our conversation with him.
Background: Captain Will Jack comes from a family with a strong marine background and began his career in the industry at the young age of 21. He started his YouTube channel as a hobby, with the goal of inspiring the younger generation to take to the waters. His channel has since gained a significant following, offering a glimpse into the life of a tugboat captain.
Day-to-Day Operations: A typical day for Captain Will involves a 6-hour watch, working 12 hours a day. As the captain, he spends most of his time overseeing operations, also, he participates in ship maintenance alongside his crew of five. The crew members share various tasks and stay on board for two-week rotations. Weather conditions pose the most significant challenges in his daily operations.
Technology and Tools: Captain Will currently uses a winch control system that allows him to set the tension and hold it, auto-tensioning features. He believes that remote monitoring and control are feasible in the near future, particularly for long journey towing. Extensive training will be necessary to make remote operation effective, with potential applications in setting autopilot for long journeys and using advanced navigation systems.
Personal Experience: One of the highlights of our interview was learning what brings Captain Will happiness in his work. He enjoys riding the boat and being on the water, which provides a sense of freedom and satisfaction. His most memorable experience was transitioning from the deck to the wheelhouse 15 years ago, a pivotal moment in his career that marked his growth.
We are grateful to Captain Will for sharing his experiences and insights. His input will play a crucial role in shaping the AUTONOMASS platform, ensuring it meets the practical needs of tug operators.
Thank you, Captain Will, for your time and invaluable contributions. Your love for being on the water and the happiness it brings can be truly inspirational to the younger generations.
